Our private University Expert qualification in Gemology offers specialised training to gain in-depth knowledge of the world of gemstones and learn to identify and analyse them based on their properties and characteristics.

Throughout the course, you will combine theoretical knowledge with significant practical laboratory training, working directly with natural gemstones and utilising key gemological instruments.

This training is aimed at both those wishing to specialise in gemology and jewellery professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of the materials they work with.

Subjects

During the course, you will acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the study, analysis, and identification of gemstones.

You will work directly with an extensive collection of natural gemstones of different carats, colours, cuts, and clarities, learning to observe their characteristics and properties using gemological instruments.

The practical sessions will allow you to familiarise yourself with different analysis methods and progressively develop the knowledge needed to identify and study various gemological materials.

Modality

100% in-person

Classes are concentrated on one weekend per month, Saturday and Sunday, between October and May.

The training involves 16 hours of in-person attendance per month, combining theoretical content and laboratory practices during the sessions.

Facilities

The training takes place in a fully equipped gemology laboratory to combine theoretical classes with practical gemstone analysis.

The laboratory features microscopes, refractometers, spectroscopes, polariscopes, Chelsea filters, 10x loupes, a proportion scope, ultraviolet light, and an extensive collection of cut gemstones and rough minerals.

Duration

1 academic year · October to May

The training comprises 150 teaching hours, including theory and practice, plus 225 hours of personal study, totalling 375 hours.

In-person classes are concentrated on one weekend per month, with a workload of 16 hours monthly.

The assessment consists of a theoretical and a practical exam, with sittings in June and September. Both parts must be passed to complete the training.
