University Expert in Synthetic and Treated Gems

Delve into the identification of synthetic, treated, and modified gems through the study of their characteristics and analysis methods.

Our private University Expert qualification in Synthetic and Treated Gems is advanced training for in-depth identification and analysis of synthetic gems and gems subjected to various treatments.

As a continuation of Gemmology training, this second course allows for addressing one of the most specialised areas of gemmological analysis: learning to recognise the characteristics that differentiate natural gems from synthetic ones and identifying the modifications and treatments they may have undergone.

A specialisation aimed at acquiring a more complete and precise knowledge of the materials currently used in jewellery.

Subjects

Throughout the course, you will delve into the study of synthetic and treated gems, learning to observe and interpret the characteristics that allow them to be identified and differentiated.

The training combines theoretical content with laboratory practicals where you will work directly with different samples and use specific gemmological instruments to analyse their properties.

Building on your previously acquired knowledge in Gemmology, you will develop a greater analytical capacity for materials that require more specialised identification procedures.

Modality

100% in-person

Classes are concentrated on one weekend per month, Saturday and Sunday, between October and May.

The training has a practical component of 16 hours per month, combining theoretical content and laboratory analysis practicals during the sessions.

Facilities

Classes take place in the School’s gemmology laboratory, specifically equipped for the study and analysis of gems.

You will have microscopes, refractometers, spectroscopes, polariscopes, Chelsea filters, 10x loupes, a proportion scope, ultraviolet light, and different collections and samples to carry out the practicals.

Duration

1 academic year · From October to May

The training comprises 150 contact hours, including theory and practicals, plus 225 hours of personal study, totalling 375 hours.

In-person classes are concentrated on one weekend per month, with a workload of 16 hours per month.
